RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
