Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of the former president's move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The court filing highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
