Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
